A new bill proposed by the House Republican Party will prevent the United Nations from compelling the United States to impose any new taxes without approval from the U.S. government.
The world is currently awaiting a United Nations vote on a carbon emissions tax for international maritime shipping, with the proposed legislation expected to be introduced this week.
Despite strong opposition from U.S. President Donald Trump, member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN-related body, voted to postpone the review of global taxation by one year.

Pfeffer's bill will ensure that the United States is not subject to financial penalties under this tax or any related decree issued by the international organization, unless such decree has been approved by the Senate.
The bill will also prohibit the U.S. government from funding any global carbon tax and prevent the United States from donating such tax revenues to the United Nations after their imposition.
The proposal to impose a global maritime shipping tax on carbon emissions has garnered support from countries such as Brazil and the European Union, which have consistently advocated for more environmentally friendly international trade.

Its main opponents are the world's top two oil producers, the United States and Saudi Arabia.
The legislation is led by August Pfluger, a Republican from Texas and chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), along with Troy Balderson, a Republican from Ohio and chairman of the RSC Energy Task Force, and Randy Weber, a Republican from Texas and vice-chairman of the task force.
Pfeuffer told reporters, "Although the United Nations postponed the vote, the fight is not over yet.".
He said, "This legislation will permanently kill their global carbon tax plan by cutting off all funding from the United States to any United Nations agency that attempts to tax the American people, and it ensures that Congress holds the final authority over all taxes, fees, and penalties imposed on U.S. citizens or corporations, rather than the United Nations."
Balderson stated that he "thanks President Trump as well as Senators Rubio, Wright, and Department of State officials like Daffy for stepping forward to oppose the United Nations and forcing the International Maritime Organization to make concessions.".
"Weber said, 'The unelected global bureaucrats at the United Nations are trying to establish another secret fund, and they expect the Americans to foot the bill. The November 2024 vote did not mention a global carbon tax, and the American people certainly won’t vote to support any carbon tax that raises costs by 10%.'"
