Saudi Petrochemical Companies Partner with China to Advance Carbon Capture Technologies and Practice

Saudi Arabia's petrochemical giant SABIC recently announced its participation in the International Innovation Cooperation Organization for Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage, guided by the China Association for Science and Technology, and assumed the role of a standing director. The company stated that it will leverage this platform to deepen exchanges and collaboration with global partners, jointly advancing the exploration and implementation of carbon capture technologies.

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation stated on social media that, as a key player in the global chemical industry, the company prioritizes carbon capture, utilization, and storage as a critical driver of its sustainable development strategy. Additionally, it will collaborate with upstream and downstream partners to advance carbon reduction through multiple technological approaches, including renewable energy utilization, electrification, and low-carbon hydrogen.

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) has become a crucial technological pathway to achieving carbon neutrality. It compensates for the limitations of conventional emission reduction methods, effectively addressing certain difficult-to-reduce carbon emissions and residual greenhouse gases in industrial production. This provides strong support for accelerating the transition to green, low-carbon, and circular development in industries such as chemical manufacturing.

The International Innovation Cooperation Organization for Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage was established in Beijing this July under the guidance of the China Association for Science and Technology, with Sinopec taking the lead. Its initial member organizations come from 12 countries, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Kazakhstan. The organization aims to build a global collaborative network, promote technological innovation, standard-setting, and technology transfer in carbon capture, utilization, and storage, and foster high-quality industrial development.
