The first World CCUS Conference (WCCUS) was successfully held in Bergen, Norway from September 1st to 4th. More than 300 experts and peers from over 30 countries gathered together to promote the development of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage), a key technology for achieving net zero goals.
The chairman of the conference, Professor Yungu from Westlake University, and academician of the Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences and the Norwegian Academy of Engineering, Yang Tao, stated that as the first conference held, WCCUS far exceeded expectations in terms of content quality and interactive participation, establishing a new platform for cross organizational and interdisciplinary CCUS global cooperation.
This conference brings together authoritative voices and professional forces in the global CCUS field, including Stanford University, University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh, European Research Infrastructure Alliance, Norwegian Aquino Energy Company, as well as other academic institutions, government organizations, and large corporations from around the world.
It is worth mentioning that China played an important role in the conference. Experts from Peking University, Nanjing University, China University of Petroleum, Zhejiang University of Technology, Changjiang University, Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC and Tencent Carbon Search Program participated in the organization of the conference. Delegations to the conference included China Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute, Changjiang University and Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Energy Research Institute. Among them, Liu He, an academician of the CAE Member, attended the conference as a special guest on behalf of PetroChina, and delivered a wonderful speech at the high-end round table conference, systematically introducing China's development status, technical progress and future prospects in the field of CCUS.
This conference has received strong support from the Norwegian Academy of Engineering (NTVA) and the Danish Academy of Engineering (ATV), and has been recognized by multiple international authoritative organizations, including the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the International Society of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA), the International Association of Reservoir Physics and Logging Analysts (SPWLA), and the American Society for Rock Mechanics (ARMA).
Next, WCCUS 2026 will be hosted by the UK in September 2026, chaired by Professor Raffaella Ocone (Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering). The preparation work for WCCUS 2027 has started, and the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Denmark, and the Netherlands have expressed strong interest. The 2027 conference may be the first to go beyond Europe, further demonstrating the truly global nature of this mission. (Xinhua News Agency)
