According to media reports, the CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) key technology equipment independently developed by Sinopec Shengli Oilfield (4.900, 0.01, 0.20%) has won the highest honor at the Geneva International Invention Exhibition - the Special Commendation Gold Award, demonstrating China's significant breakthrough in the core technology field of carbon reduction.
Li Yang, an academician of the CAE Member and secretary-general of the International CCUS Innovation Cooperation Organization, pointed out that this achievement marks that China's CCUS key technology and equipment in the whole chain have become the international leader, not only laying a solid foundation for China's CCUS industry to go global, but also contributing to the world's carbon emission reduction governance with replicable and landing Chinese programs.
The CCUS industry covers the entire process of capture, transportation, storage, and oil displacement, involving dozens of core equipment. It has long faced bottlenecks such as dependence on imported key equipment and dependence on humans for core technologies. Yu Fazhen, Secretary of the Party Branch of the CCUS Project Department of Shengli Oilfield, frankly stated that in the past, the development of China's CCUS industry was limited by foreign technology, and independent innovation was urgently needed.

Targeting the shortcomings of key equipment throughout the entire process, the CCUS R&D team of Shengli Oilfield continues to tackle and achieve breakthroughs. According to CCUS expert Zhang Shiming, in the capture process, the team independently developed a million ton low-energy capture technology, achieving a comprehensive unit energy consumption reduction of 19% and a cost reduction of over 30%.
In the transportation process, the world's first impurity containing carbon dioxide supercritical digital twin intelligent pipeline has been built, innovating a safe and efficient transportation mode in the near critical zone, and reducing operation and maintenance costs by 30%; Breakthrough in integrated technology solutions for oil displacement and storage, resulting in an increase of over 15 percentage points in crude oil recovery rate and a 20 percentage point increase in carbon dioxide primary storage rate.
While developing core equipment, the team has also successfully overcome common industry challenges such as low-energy and low-cost capture, long-distance pipeline safety control, and low recovery and storage rates in terrestrial oil reservoirs, breaking through the bottleneck of the entire CCUS industry development chain.
Technological breakthroughs have brought tangible results. As of now, the million ton CCUS project in Shengli Oilfield has achieved underground storage of all injected carbon dioxide, and the daily oil production has increased from 220 tons to 460 tons, doubling and continuously increasing production, balancing ecological and energy benefits.
